Bradford is a city with many social challenges – poverty, violence and divided communities – yet also a long history of peace initiatives. A former Bradford MP won the Nobel Peace Prize in the 1930s, and many eminent Bradfordians such as Sir Titus Salt, J B Priestley, and David Hockney have made their mark for peace and social justice.
Bradford has a Peace Museum, a new Peace Trail, and the world’s oldest,
best-known and largest University Department of Peace Studies.

The University of Bradford is proud to host the annual UK PeaceJam Conference and Slam. PeaceJam UK is run through the offices of Pugwash Conferences on Science and World Affairs, because their late founder, Nobel Peace Laureate Professor Sir Joseph Rotblat - an eminent nuclear physicist who became an active campaigner against nuclear weapons – strongly supported PeaceJam. The Pugwash office liaises with schools and provides teacher training and curriculum support.
